How does varicose vein removal work?

Varicose veins most often occur when an intravenous valve problem disrupts the flow of blood to the heart, causing blood to back up and pool in the veins. This problem is best solved by removing the damaged vein.

This new system removes the vein by using transillumination, which passes light through the skin to illuminate the vein, allowing the surgeon to see clearly which vein needs to be removed. The surgeon then can precisely remove the vein.

With the system, only two or three 2-millimeter incisions are made. In traditional procedures, such as vein stripping, dozens of incisions are made along the length of the vein, resulting in severe scarring.

The tiny incisions made are so small that after a short time of healing, they are no more noticeable than a freckle.
