Hernia Center

A hernia is a weakness or tear in the abdominal wall that allows tissue or an organ, such as the intestines, to protrude through the weak area. This can cause a noticeable bulge under the skin and can cause significant pain and discomfort. Although hernias tend to be more common in men than in women, they can occur in anyone.

Weakness in the abdominal wall can occur at birth and can exist long before the resulting hernia appears. Symptoms tend to worsen when anything puts additional strain on the area, such as standing for long periods, having strenuous bowel movements or lifting heavy objects.

Common risk factors include:

  • A chronic cough
  • Obesity
  • Strain during bowel movements or urination
  • Pregnancy
  • Strain when lifting heavy objects
  • Persistent sneezing
